When you're younger, your life is a whole lot easier. You don't have deadlines to meet (except maybe a diorama or two), you get to do various activities after school that you actually enjoy, and you don't have to pay your own bills.
Quite the life.
Well, I've been reflecting on childhood, and I believe that there are 5 things that you CAN and SHOULD continue doing when you're an adult.
1. Naptime
(no this isn't Penny Lane, but she is pretty cute) via
I know, this might seem impossible for most of you out there. But, I'm a firm believer that when you can (on the weekends mostly) take a nap. Do it! It's important to recharge your batteries and clear your mind. Don't over do it though -- just 30-45 minutes should do the trick.
2. Recess
3. S.S.R.
Sustained, Silent, Reading. Don't you love my 5th grade acronym? In our crazy lives I think it's important to take 30 minutes a day, or a at least 3 days a week to read in silence. Cozy up in your favorite chair and pour a cup of hot tea, or glass of wine (pick your poison).
4. Snack Time
So many meals are eaten on the go, that it can be hard to stay energized. I recommend carrying granola bars, or nuts with you so you can have an adult snack time. If you're feeling more indulgent, step out of the office and grab some fro-yo. Any excuse for fro-yo, right?
5. Sit down meals
This sounds like a given, right? Well, i'm not talking about zapping a lean cuisine and sitting on the couch. I mean cook a semi-homemade meal, like these from The Everygirl, set the table, and enjoy a meal away from distraction. It is important to connect with those around you and enjoy your meal free from the latest episode of Gossip Girl.
I hope that some of these ideas spark the 10-year old in you. Have I missed anything?
Happy Tuesday!

This is the BEST. Re-living life in the 3rd grade makes me agree with all of this wholeheartedly. I need to get back to the basics and leave my cell phone in another room while doing so.
I love these tips! S.S.R. totally made me smile. I had forgotten all about that. Definitely going to try to incorporate these things in my week.
Aw I love this post. All so very true. Its so important to recharge. And SSR? Totally forgot about that until now!
Julia, these are GREAT things to remember. Life was so much simpler back then but hey, I wouldn't trade being in my 20's for much else ;) Thanks for giving me some inspiration to have a much better day with these simple ideas!
Girl, you were spot on with these! I love SSR and you can never have too much fro-yo!
I really love this post, Julia! I need to take more time to read and nap. It's really energizing.
Omg I thought MY 5th grade teacher made up SSL!!!
I love this post- Recess for grown-ups is a MUST.
i don't think i've stopped doing any of these things? in fact, i am adamant about nap time in the middle of the day or else i get crabby! working from home helps though ;)

I could not agree more with all five points. I'm a firm believer in nap time and snack time :)
i would love naptime but i take 2 hour naps...like an infant.
Such a great post! Maybe the only thing I'd add would be "jumping in puddles." :)
SSR time! Wow you just brought back some serious memories lady. Love this post!
I LOVE this. These 5 things are a must do for everyone and I love that you captured them all.
I love this post :) goes to show just how much we can stand to learn from kids! I could kick myself that I didn't take advantage of nap hour in kindergarten.... what I would do for that now!!! and yes about an actual dinner... it makes such a difference when kip + I eat at a table and not in front of the TV!

I LOVE this! I'm a huge fan of SSR but haven't made the time for it lately. Good reminder to slow down and enjoy life a little more.

What a great reminder! And I haven't heard S.S.R. in SO long! What a memory. Thanks for this :)
This is probably the best list ever. Yes on all of them. Love the reading one...have to do more of that.
I need some more SSR in my life! great tips
Love this - totally need to bring back nap time! Love it.
Such a great reminder to slow down and appreciate life... I'm a nanny for a 10-month-old baby and when she cries at naptime, I think, just wait till you're older and you'll be dying for naps!
SUCH A GREAT POST!! I def. agree about nap time. I take naps almost too frequently... xox Elizabeth
